Walk, Work, Worship

Sometimes people ask, “What is the secret to a happy and fulfilling life?”

Over the years I tried to find a crisp and short answer to this one question and finally I could:

“Walk, Work and Worship”

Let me explain…

It is important to keep the balances of life right!

First of all let us talk of imbalances. To me imbalances of life mean our tilt towards either ‘abundance’ or ‘deprivation’. Too much or too less of something is not right (my perspective). You can ponder over this and decide on your own. Is too much money good for you? Probably it will take you away from spiritualism or probably you will start competing with the top 500 or 100 richest and keep striving even after having a lot of wealth. If we do not enough have money to take care of our family and a basic need, life becomes miserable. Probably answer lies somewhere in the middle and that is why I say ‘keep the balances right’ and you will be happier!

Let’s talk about “Walk” from “Walk, Work and Worship”

Walk implies physical well-being. To attain this we can be regular with our morning / evening walks or runs, practice yoga, dance, play with kids or pets so that we get enough cardio exercise and our body works fine and remain agile. This will save us from suffering because of ailments or lifestyle related diseases or conditions like hypertension, diabetes, heart-diseases and so on.

If we are fit, it is not only good for us but also for our family and friends. A routine is a must. Routine comes from will-power and determination. Those people who are able to improve their will power and determination are also able to perform well in other spheres of life.

Let us discuss “Work” now…

For a student, work can be going to the school or college regularly, being prompt with the assignments, doing the homework etc.; for a homemaker it could be cooking, cleaning, washing clothes, gardening and / or overall home management; for a business executive, it would be going to the office or field and executing the professional responsibilities so that s/he can earn and support the family and save some to realize the dreams like a good vacation, buying a sedan etc.

‘Working’ means you are useful to yourself and for others. It means you can make some difference to your surroundings. A scientist works to create something to make things more efficient and effective; a doctor works for treating the ailing people; an MBA, an engineer or a CA works towards building businesses and sustaining them by contributing to the industrial growth. For that matter, bees are so fond of work that we use an idiom ‘as busy as a bee.’ Work defines who you are and what you are capable of doing.

Finally, some of you may ask “Why worship?”

Well, you may be an atheist but that is OK. I can say this from my own experiences that sometimes humans feel weak and we tend to have this feeling that we cannot control and change everything around us; we are just humans after all…we have limitations. At such times, we seek solace or peace.

It is easy when you connect yourself spiritually. Spiritual connection does not mean to connect with a religion or God necessarily. You can connect with the nature as well…meditate and try to rid your mind of thoughts. It will give you peace and an opportunity to calibrate yourself. This is important. Try if you do not believe!

Now if you over or under-do any of these i.e., walk, work or worship; do you think you can be happy? No, you cannot be…because life is all about balances! This is the key to happiness!

Be happy! Keep your balances right and help other with it too!
